Passport and Visa Information
  • To enter the Dominican Republic, citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries need a valid passport. Upon your arrival at the airport in the Dominican Republic, you must purchase a tourist card for US$10 (£5.20). You can avoid waiting in line by purchasing this card when checking in for your flight to the island.

  • The Dominican peso is the national currency of the country, although US dollars (USD) are acceptable in most tourist sites. The peso was worth the same as the USD at one time, but has recently decreased in value.

  • Americans over age 25 can easily rent a car in the Dominican Republic as long as they have a valid driver's license. In fact, most of the popular rental agencies in the United States have offices in major cities in the Dominican Republic.
  • The local time zone is Eastern Caribbean Time (GMT -0400). In the winter this is one hour ahead of Eastern Time. The Dominican Republic does not observe daylight savings time.
  • Tipping is widely practiced throughout the country. While restaurants automatically add a 10 percent tip to the bill it's customary to give a bit extra - up to 10 percent additional. Tips are also given to taxi drivers, maids and porters.
