Getting Wet in the Jungles of Costa Rica
Staying dry nearly impossible here if you know where to look
By Heather Whipps
It's perfectly acceptable to go to Costa Rica and come out dry and squeaky-clean on the other side. But that wouldn't be very fun. Despite its calm, sleepy beaches and the luxury properties that front them, this country is really meant for getting soaked, your feet muddy and heart thumping. You just have to look a little further inland, where rainforests dominate the landscape and hide an endless array of activity. These jungles, dense and steamy, make for great day trips in between lazy sessions at the beach and gourmet meals on your villa terrace.
All the adventure you can get your hands on can usually be found within an hour from Tango Mar, where our Costa Rican villas are situated. Most guests don't miss the chance to do a canopy tour (otherwise known as zip-lining), where you're hiked up and strapped in for an adrenaline rush through the rainforest treetops. White water rafting is also very popular, but doesn't need to be all extreme sports and no play: many operators offer lunch and champagne by jungle waterfalls after the screaming is done. Bungee-jumping, kayaking and rock climbing are just a few of the other things adventure junkies can try in Costa Rica.

Tropical forests are also perfect for spotting exotic fauna. Animal lovers who hike or bike on marked trails surrounding Tango Mar are almost guaranteed a few monkey sightings; if you're really lucky you might spot a jaguar sunning on a riverside rock. Many rainforest animals are nocturnal but, if you're that gung-ho, evening jungle tours (complete with night-vision goggles) are available in the area.
Our villas in Costa Rica:

Casa Pacifico Huge six-bedroom with full staff, right on the beach

Palacio Tropical Brand new and extravagant, built for outdoor living
Montezuma's Revenge
Montezuma, located just a few minutes from Tango Mar, is infamous on Costa Rica as the hottest and oddest beach around—everything from UFO sightings to spiritual awakenings have been reported here. It's sticky, it's hippie and plenty pretty. Visit if you dare. |
