That’s Amore! Italy’s Most Romantic Destinations
Scenic surroundings and villas with charm paint a lovely picture
By Heather Whipps
For Italians, a nice glass of wine, a delicious meal shared with friends or a statue crafted with delicate expertise are all reason enough to celebrate the romance of la vita bella. Gorgeous countryside and the cobbled streets of cities centuries old don’t hurt the mood, either, and these scenes are ubiquitous here from top to toe-tip of the boot. It is no wonder poets and composers, not to mention the globe’s most prolific artists, were inspired to craft their own labors of love here. In the spirit of amore, we’ve highlighted Italy’s most romantic regions...

Tuscany
The wine, the rolling hills, the medieval towns...oh, Tuscany…did my heart love ‘til now? Even the musky sound of its name as it rolls across the throat is enough to send endorphins flying through the most hardened of souls. Italy’s most popular tourist region is one of its most conducive to amore. Like the halting steps of a waltz, towns crop up here intermittingly and are separated by the swooping valleys of winery and olive groves. In between, you’ll find villas like Santa Lucia di Sopra. With 10 bedrooms you can invite the whole family (maybe for a wedding?) or just spread the love yourself in a different suite every night. The villa is even painted the color of love - a sultry terra cotta red likely visible from off in the surrounding Chianti hillside. La Bianca, a restored 2 bedroom villa on a large estate near Siena, is another great option.

Umbria
If Tuscany is a waltz, then Umbria is a tango: a bit darker (even its name means shadow) and more seductive. Rivers slice through here and have spurred the growth of dense forest and cypress groves, where even sweaty hikes can take on an air of romance. Cool off with a dip in the pool at Torre Palombara, a grand 8 bedroom estate also with its own fields and groves for strolling. A big group can stay here together but still enjoy some privacy in the villa’s large, romantic bedrooms. With half the bedrooms, Villa Monteporzano is equally lovely - especially factoring in its views of the Todi countryside.

Campania & The Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast exudes a kind of glamorous love you’d recognize in the movies, hidden behind silk headscarves and enormous dark sunglasses. It’s the Vespa-buzzing, road-winding, Italian version of California’s coastal south, complete with the perfect weather. Couples are known to share cliff side cappuccinos overlooking the ocean here, or take day-ferry trips to the isle of Capri for a walk among the boutiques. All this to say that romantic villas like Casa Guisy fit in just fine in this region, playing home base to the love-seeking and in love alike. On the island of Ischia, just off the coast, five-bedroom Abelarda invites amore with its chilled, ivy-laced terraces and breathtaking position high above the sea.

Northern But Not Forgotten
Turin, the site of this year’s Winter Olympics, is located in Italy’s northern alpine region – a setting not always associated with the country’s classic postcard views. The region’s provinces of Lombardy and Piedmonte, however, boast some of its most romantic scenery. |
