An Isle With Style: Top 5 Things to Do in Mykonos
Greek island offers lots of action and variety
By Heather Whipps
Greece counts a slew of gorgeous islands – not to mention too many islets to tally - in its fold, yet Mykonos stands out among the crowd year after year as one of the country’s most popular. Nearly one million people reach its shores every year to mingle among the friendly locals, just 15,000 strong who wear their permanent status as a badge of honor. And with good reason: this is a happening place with a little bit of everything, from gourmet dining to a subsidiary islet with ancient ruins that would make other European "Old Towns" blush in reverence. With that to start, here’s a condensed list of the activities that keep Mykono-philes coming back:

1. Beach-Hopping
There’s no sense in denying it’s the beaches – and weather that makes them heavenly – that lure people here more than anything else. More than that, Mykonos boasts a thriving beach culture like few other places on earth, rife with music and parties and all-round good times nearly twenty-four hours a day. The aptly named south coast Paradise and Super Paradise beaches are its best known, though those in search of a bit more peace and quiet can find solace on the north coast. Four-bedroom Villa Okyroe sits somewhere in the middle near Mykonos Town, letting you get the best of both worlds.

2. Getting Lost in Hora
Hora, or Mykonos Town as some call the island’s only major town, is a veritable labyrinth of narrow, winding streets (often unmarked) that’ll have you searching for restaurants and boutiques in vain. But that’s half the fun of it. A trip through Hora, mapped out or haphazard, will inevitably lead to the discovery of new places you’d never thought to try. Villas Kerithium and Astarte will be ideal for unwinding after the spin through Hora, with their soothing sea views and cool colors so prevalent in Greece.

3. Jewelry Shopping
Considering its size, Mykonos has a sizeable selection of fine jewelry on display. None is more typical to the region than LALAoUNIS, a renowned designer famous for reproducing gorgeous Byzantine-era pieces. Everything in his shop is crafted according to the standard Greeks have been using for 4,000 years – a lot of practice and enough time to exact designs to perfection. Villa Hurmuses, a striking five-bedroom villa with pool, is just a short walk to the boutique…perfect for strolling home, arms laden with shopping bags!

4. Dining and Dancing
And not just any dining – gastronomy Greek-style, with all of the festivities that come along with it. Greeks like to stretch their meals out over periods of several hours, interspersing the courses with pockets of dancing and general revelry. Restaurants like Maria’s Garden are famous for serving up the freshest of produce with a side of ambiance. For those nights in, have your own dinner party on the terrace at Villa Galaxy. The starlit pool deck is the perfect spot for impromptu bouzouki.

5. Day Tripping to Delos
Delos, actually a tiny island unto itself, is a popular activity for visitors because of the proximity to Mykonos and the sheer wealth of archaeological remnants there. Ferries frequently make the quick trip to Delos, which is the mythical home of Apollo and has many ruined temples to his name on show. If you want to spy on Delos all day, stay at Villa Gracia a la Vida. This spacious seven-bedroom home overlooks the island from its perch near the beach at Agios Ioannis.
