Get Swept Off Your Feet By the Magic of Mallorca
Sun-soaked villa escape offers many diversions
By Heather Whipps
Mallorca (or Majorca) is one of six islands that make up the Balearic chain strung off Spain’s eastern, Mediterranean coastline. While technically part of the Spanish realm, the islands are ruled by a separate government and have a history of their own, though just as varied and intriguing as their mainland counterpart. Changing hands between the Romans, Greeks, Moors, and the cathedral-happy Byzantines, the islands brim with ruins and villages rife with ancient dwellings and fortifications. While Minorca and Ibiza, especially, have their charms, it is Mallorca that remains the cultural and tourist hub of the Balearics.
Life on Mallorca centers in Palma, the capital and most populous city on the island. Built mainly in the traditional, walled casbah-style by the Moors, a vibrant city has grown up around the remnants and become an alluring destination of gourmet dining (try some of the island’s famous Basque cuisine), shopping for local crafts and fine Mallorcan pearls, golfing and other active pursuits like hiking. The beaches, of course, are a big part of why Mallorca is as popular as it is, with their typically Mediterranean sands of rich gold and warm, turquoise water. Migrate outside of the city for strips that area just as lovely, but less crowded than the ones you’ll find within Palma.
Venturing beyond the city walls, Mallorca offers much in the way of scenic landscapes seemingly perfected for those postcards homes. The north is a mountainous and dramatic, the south a romantic weaving of almond and olive groves. Along coastlines in between you’ll spot many a small town pop up inviting you for a visit. Local traditions still feature prominently in the lives of the Mallorcan people, and you may just be lucky enough to take a small part in this culture that has developed over hundreds of years. Also nestled snuggly among the hills and beaches ringing its shore are villa rentals, a perfect fit for this destination where you’re likely to want to set up shop for awhile.

Two of our most elegant villa rentals in Mallorca share land on the sprawling estate once owned by British Virgin tycoon Richard Branson. Four thousand acres of mountainous forestland in the northwest cocoon Sa Terra and Sa Punta, each unique in its own right and separate enough to ensure complete privacy. Both villas have been recently refurbished to the highest standards and are decorated in a traditional Mallorcan style, with exposed beam ceilings, cool terra cotta tiled floors and soft white interiors. Each can sleep eight guests in comfort, while a staff dedicated to the property is on hand at all times. Sa Punta offers chef and butler services included in the rental during the months of July and August.

STALACTITES, STALAGMITES AND PEARLS…OH MY!
Mallorca is famous for the underground, and sometimes underwater, caves which carve its eastern coastline. You can visit many of these dreamlike landscapes on organized tours. The same area is responsible for producing the island’s traditional man-made pearls, which are made from fish scales that resemble the sheer white gem. |
