Whistler: The Ideal Family Destination
Swoosh-swoosh-swoosh, it’s time to plan ahead for winter!
By Heather Whipps

The world got it right when it chose Whistler to host the 2010 installment of the Winter Olympics. This ski resort slash alpine village, just 74 miles north of the cosmopolitan city of Vancouver, has over the years become North America’s premiere ski resort, offering more trails (200+), lifts (33) and terrain (8,000 acres) than any other on the continent. But forget the numbers. Whistler is simply a great place to visit, not just for its skiable delights but for its ambiance and something-for-everyone attitude. With off-mountain activities galore and a friendly, safe environment, there is no better place for a winter holiday with the kids.

Whistler can charm the entire family, from the little ones on up. There are the trails, of course, where beginner hills offer the chance to teach your little ski bunnies their first snowplow. Your whiz-bang teen, perhaps already more adept at the sport than you, can tackle its tricky black diamonds. But it doesn’t end there. Within the village boundaries are activities to keep everyone busy when you’ve skied your last trail of the day. Try snowshoeing or dog sledding as a family, or a tour of the mountain in one of Whistler’s famous "snowcats". Whistler offers children’s programs customizable to your child, and while they’re busy you can check out the myriad of boutiques on offer throughout Whistler’s village streets. The village is also saturated with restaurants where you can refuel on gourmet local flavors (or just a few slices of pizza) together later in the evening.

Whistler’s cozy, private chalets play a big role in making it an ideal family destination. These chalets, set aside just for you, offer families the chance to stick together and have a home base during their ski holiday—somewhere to converge after a long, tiring day and unwind. In the evening, you can sit by the fire and play games or watch movies in your living room. Having the kids under one secure roof will provide peace of mind, especially after they’re tucked in and you can keep a watchful eye from your private hot tub.

These are just a few of our favorite chalets in Whistler:

Redwood at Sunrise:
This three-bedroom home is large and luxurious, with lots of little details that you’ll have fun discovering while there. Its open-air designed living room is great for evenings together with the family.

Telemark:
Ski in and out of this three-bedroom chalet just minutes from the heart of Whistler village. Its cozy log-cabin feel is perfect for laid-back families who want the true alpine ski holiday experience. Its sunset views are amazing.

Rainbow River Lodge:
This four-bedroom home brings a little bit of Switzerland to Whistler village, with a warm chalet ambiance set with luxurious touches. Gather the family around its two wood-burning fireplaces.
