Caribbean Hot Spots for your Fall Getaway
Anguilla, Tortola, Barbados, oh my!
By Heather Whipps

Fall on the islands of the Caribbean is an interesting time. It’s a slice of the calendar before a lot of the winter crowds have arrived but after the intense heat of the summer, when a lot of the locals take it easy and islands are languid shadows of their true selves. In a way, fall getaways here are a bit more authentic—with the layers of visitors stripped away—and more to the core of what each island is all about. Like barefoot romance or the watery delights waiting to be explored offshore. Not that you can be shoehorned into one specific category, but if you spot shades of your vacation style in the following island descriptions, it’s a start at least at orienting your compass for this fall’s trip. Plus, we offer a few of our top-rated villas to make your selection just that bit easier.

Anguilla: For Romance
Not that there’s nothing to do on Anguilla, but let’s just say that travelers don’t come here looking for raucous nightlife or endless activity. This is the perfect strolling hand-in-hand destination if there ever was one, made even more so by the 35 or so white-perfect beaches and clear glass water that surrounds it. Pack light...you won’t be needing much.

Bird of Paradise Pelican Hill

Tortola: For Nature Lovers and Relaxation
Green and rolling like one gigantic park, Tortola is the perfect island for nature lovers who like to mix their hiking excursions with time just laying around. There are a few towns to stroll through here, but visitors are usually content just to explore Tortola’s palm forests—either by foot or with their eyes from lounges on their villa’s balcony.

Gun Point Sade

Turks & Caicos: For Underwater Enthusiasts
It would be an understatement to call the Turks & Caicos a good scuba diving destination. Jacques Cousteau himself counted the island of Providenciales among the best in the world, and its renown has only grown since. Strap on a mask and some flippers and you can keep busy for weeks, trolling through reefs as long as the island itself, shipwrecks, caves and other underwater treasures. When you do come up for air, the island has one of the world’s best beaches, too.

Beach Villa Paprika Avalon Stargazer

Barbados: For Beach Bunnies
As one of the Caribbean’s bigger islands, Barbados is blessed with plenty of beach mileage around its perimeter. Pink, white and invariably soft, the sand on its west coast is Barbados’ most famous and is where most visitors congregate. So too do the water sports vendors; take a break from the beach worship with a jet ski or banana tube ride. Not to worry: there are enough bits and pieces here to ensure you’ll always find something quiet, if that’s what you prefer.

Sandalo Villas on the Beach #201 The Summer House

Theme, Interrupted

With the exception of Barbados, all of the destinations listed above are located conveniently (read: quick ferry or island-hopper plane) close to neighboring islands that offer a break from the theme, even just for a day. Staying on Anguilla? Hop over to St. Martin for a few hours and sample its casinos and nightlife. Tortola? Jaunt over to St. Thomas and shop ‘til you drop in its duty-free malls and markets.
