Beat the Rush to Book Your Winter Ski Chalet
Don’t wait to secure the perfect spot for your winter getaway
By Heather Whipps

To secure their preferred travel dates and locations, eager skiers have been known to lock in their winter plans well in advance. An overly keen bunch? Maybe. But there’s nothing worse than having dreams of swooshing ‘cross groomed powder quashed by a lack of availability. And one of the hottest commodities in demand right now is Beaver Creek, Colorado.

Beaver Creek is part of the Vail Valley, a mountain-crested bowl boasting 146 trails, 16 lifts and an amazing 1,625 ski-able acres of terrain. Trails run the gamut from expert-challenging diamonds to gentle beginner slopes, keeping everyone happy no matter what their skill level. Beaver Creek also offers a bounty of winter activities for the non-skier too, like skating, dogsledding, snowshoe and sleigh rides. The resort’s kid-friendly ski school and nursery programs are an added bonus. Apart from its snowy amenities, the resort is known for its elegant atmosphere and refined nightlife.

Both Chateau Colore and Colorado Lodge are located near the action on top of the Ritz-Carlton in Beaver Creek’s exclusive village of Bachelor Gulch. Chateau Colore offers three bedrooms and is cozy and luxurious at the same time. Its designer furnishings and custom fittings will remove any preconceived notion of chalets being rustic. With four bedrooms, Colorado Lodge is great for large groups with elegant tastes. Its top-floor position provides great views of the surrounding mountains.

No slouches in the ski category either, Whistler and Vail are alternative destinations with their own charms and draws:

Whistler is in full-swing these days, gearing up excitedly for the 2010 Olympics. If you want to pre-test the championship trails, two new chalets are available at Whistler: Redwood at Sunrise and Telemark.

Vail is a classic ski destination and can always be relied on for great conditions and energetic off-trail life. 366 Forest Road is a comfortable five-bedroom, ski in/ski out option for this winter season.

Hot Fun in the Summertime

There’s just one consolation if you do miss out on this year’s booking season: like Vail and Whistler, Beaver Creek is a hive of activity twelve months out of the year, so you can always plan a summer trip to get acquainted with the area first. Just remember to pack the golf clubs instead of the skis.
