I Love Paris in the Springtime
Apartments in the heart of Paris make an ideal base from which to explore
By Heather Whipps
What makes Paris such a stroll-friendly city? Dense, colorful rues with something to see around every corner, an architectural mish-mash of bygone eras and modern flair, and the Seine, of course, with sites snug against its winding shore. The neighborhoods that make up Paris, called arrondissements, total no fewer than twenty and are so varied you’d swear sometimes that you’re traveling across international boundaries, not streets, between each. Many visitors to the city see a few arrondissements and then claim one as right for them, staying there year after year as a base to explore Paris. Here are a few of the best:

The Latin Quarter (5ième)
The Latin Quarter – named for the language used colloquially by Paris’ university set in the Middle Ages – lies on the city’s left (or southern) bank. Within the tightly packed and colorful alleyways you’ll find cafés filled with students discussing world events, restaurants and clubs with an international flair, and upscale fashion boutiques. Named in honor of the famed school nearby, the Sorbonne Suite is the ideal elegant headquarters from which to check out the Latin Quarter’s sites. This two-bedroom apartment is also located very close to the Luxembourg Gardens – the largest park in Paris. Taking its name, Luxembourg is a romantic one-bedroom apartment perfect for the traveling couple. Also in the Latin Quarter, the One Bedroom Penthouse has great views of this historical district.

Champs Elysees (8ème)
Say ‘Paris’ and the Champs Elysees is what often springs to mind. The arrondissement, on the city’s right bank, shares its name with the famous boulevard lined with some of the world’s priciest, designer names. The neighborhood also hides Paris’ wealthiest residential areas and is a delight to walk around and admire. To do that, stay at Champs Elysees-Parc Monceau, a three-bedroom apartment within walking distance of the action. It also has a great view of the Eiffel Tower. A couple might prefer Faubourg St. Honore, a one-bedroom just one block from the Presidential Palace.

St. Germain des Prés (6ème)
As other arrondissements ebb and flow on the tide of being hip and current, St. Germain des Prés remains a stalwart favorite. Once the home of Paris’ bohemian artist and intellectual set, St. Germain now welcomes a mix of chic restaurants and art galleries within its borders. If you want to stay in St. Germain, opt for an apartment like Rue de Grenelle or St. Germain. Both are luxurious one-bedroom suites and are great for setting off on a typical Parisian stroll.

Strolling on the River...
In addition to strolling Paris’ many neighborhoods, many visitors opt for a cruise on the Seine to get a river’s-eye view of its most famous sites, many of which are clustered along its banks. |
