New Destination: Vacation Homes in Napa Valley
Take the time to stay in the valley and experience all its charms
By Heather Whipps
The wine country of Napa Valley may be the getaway of choice for California’s well-heeled weekenders, but there’s more to the region than what’s on the trendy surface. Like the best wine regions in Italy and France, roots here go deep with vintners in Napa having plied their trade through several generations. Most of the valley’s wineries, conveniently, sprout up along one single route that you can traverse in about a half-hour’s time, though the idea is to stop frequently along the way and make a few days of it. A trip to Napa should be indulgent and resemble how a wine connoisseur tastes a good vintage: slowly and carefully, savoring the aromas and appreciating every last drop. Vineyard tours will usually last a few hours and include walks through the harvesting, pressing, and fermenting process. A tasting closes the tour, of course, and fine restaurants are often on site to feed guests as well.

Napa is a romantic destination fit for lovers but, as the movie Sideways showed, also great for buddies (male OR female) on a weekend getaway or families looking to relax together. Wine-lovers should be more than satiated, but even non-drinkers toted along for the ride can expect to be kept busy and happy: try a quintessential hot-air balloon trip, promising the best vineyard views of all, a few rounds of golf, or services at one of many upscale spas in the area. Kids would love a bicycle tour of the scenic, wide-open roads.

If you’re staying at a vacation home in the heart of Wine Country, these activities can be pre-arranged for you by Luxury Retreats’ concierge service.
Picture a private massage on the pool deck of stunning Tawantan, which sits on a hill above the vineyards like a floating palace. Glass walls throughout and hardwood details add to its luxurious natural atmosphere. You may also host a wine-tasting and BBQ in the backyard at Twin Palms Estate, which fittingly resembles the kind of villa you’d find in the hillsides of Italy.
Film Noir... Pinot, That Is
In the 2004 film Sideways, Paul Giamatti’s character is a wine connoisseur with a particular affinity for a good Pinot Noir. According to Napa officials, sales of the brand have skyrocketed in the years since the movie release. Jumping on the bandwagon? Pair this light and fruity wine with grilled salmon or a rack of lamb. |
