Everyone Will Be Charmed By the Croatian Coast
History, golf & romance buffs love Istria
By Heather Whipps

Croatia is what you’d imagine every other Mediterranean outpost looked like before being discovered by the tourist masses, an idyllic snapshot of medieval villages against a backdrop of unsullied Adriatic sand. In a history largely influenced by the cultures that surround it, the country has also managed to inherit the best of each and make it its own. The cuisine of Italy, Greece’s festive nature, and Austria’s regal heritage are all felt here in spades, but always with a distinctly Croatian twist.

The island-speckled, blue waters of Croatia’s northern Adriatic coast are by far the country’s most popular destination, especially in the dazzling summer months. Istria, as the area is called, offers such a mosaic of historic towns and stark, natural beauty that it has lured Europe’s holidaying royalty for decades. History buffs will adore the ruins to explore here, including the city of Pula’s famous Roman amphitheatre.

Explore Pula using the villa Stancija Meneghetti as your base. This four-bedroom farmhouse is surrounded by olive groves and will be a great place to relax with the family after a day of sightseeing.

Active types can golf and hike in Istria, while just about everyone will love its beaches. Try staying at Villa Marina for to take full advantage of the outdoors. Located in Umag, this three-bedroom villa overlooks the sea but also has access to tennis courts and sports centre nearby. With a children’s playground on site, it’s great for traveling with young ones.

Both the landscapes and meandering, cobbled streets in Istria ooze romance, so couples looking to get away – just the two – are also in luck. Villa Antonija, Villa Aurora and Villa Tanja, each two bedrooms homes in Umag, are good options for small, intimate trips.

For an extra dash of romance, try chartering a sailboat for a day on the water. This activity also provides some of the best views of the seaside towns.

Tie One On

Croatia has the unique distinction of displaying the largest tie (cravat) in the world: a red one, nearly a kilometer long, that was knotted around Pula’s famous Roman theatre in 2003. Why, you ask? This little-known country actually invented the snazzy neckwear, today worn by dressed-up men across the globe.
