Villas: The Best of Napa
Experience All That California Has to Offer
By Heather Whipps

Just 35 miles long but packing quite a potent punch per square inch, the Napa Valley in California is considered one of the world’s premiere wine-growing destinations. It is made up of a fertile swatch of rolling hills northeast of San Francisco in a microclimate that favors the growth of not just a few types of grape, but such a myriad that you’d be hard-pressed not to find at least one producer of your favorite wine here.

There are Cabernets and Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and Merlots. And, conveniently, nearly all of the wineries that churn them line one single road like a tantalizing taste-test. Let the tours begin. Most visitors to the Napa Valley rent a car and tour a few wineries each day. Tours usually include some instruction on the wine-making process and at least a tasting of the delicious result. Finish off the day with a meal at one of Napa’s renowned dining establishments, like The French Laundry, a restaurant that has actually been dubbed “The Best in the World” many times over by magazines and gourmand polls.

The Napa vintners association likes to say that the valley is like Eden for the lucky wine grape that gets to grow there. We bet you’ll think it’s pretty heavenly too, and the best way to immerse yourself in the indulgent wine-valley lifestyle is by staying at a rental villa at its heart. Surrounded by incredible landscapes and a history as richly flavored as the wine itself, it will be easy to relax into the slowed-down, romantic way of things here. Spend your days touring the wineries and then tote your booty back home to enjoy it in your private pool, on your terrace or over a gourmet dinner: now that’s Napa.

Tawantan is one of the most jaw-dropping villas in our entire collection—a very private three-bedroom home perched on top of one of the region’s highest hills. Its design is obsessed with the views; floor-to-ceiling glass instead of walls, an open-plan on the main floor and a pool projecting outwards from the mountain as if floating independently above it. Our Twin Palms Estate is very different, but no less inviting. Designed in the style of an Italian villa, the four-bedroom home is tucked away in the hillsides above Napa County. Its backyard deck and pool area, complete with large BBQ and outdoor fireplace, are great for entertaining.

Take a Load Off
If you’re beat from all those strenuous winery tours, Napa Valley also offers a heady bouquet of spas to choose from. Many offer the regional specialty—mud baths—with a twist, using a little bit of the vintage in the potion. If you’d prefer your wine in a glass rather than in the tub, just ask!
