Three miles outside Jackson, along a winding country road, a gate marked by two elk heralds ‘On the Elk Refuge,’ a jewel vacation property located in a magical area of Wyoming. As its name implies, this chalet is set the grounds of the National Elk Refuge. Great herds of these adorable creatures cross the wide grasslands, and foxes, coyotes, deer and eagles are also abundant. Meanwhile, the jagged Teton mountains reign silent over all.
On the Elk Refuge is a big, open house, built all on one level, in the simple, pared down style of National Park buildings, trim painted in classic camp-green. The exterior simplicity of Elk Refuge is deceptive, for inside, all is richness and color, texture and comfort, excellence of design. The great room features long leather couches looking out to the breathtaking panorama outside. Huge peeled tree trunks support the peaked ceiling. The dining area, kitchen and breakfast table are open concept and warmed by the beautiful river rock fireplace.
